היפוך (Inversion) הוא מבנה מתקדם שבו הפועל העזר מופיע לפני הנושא — לרוב כדי להדגיש ביטוי שלילי או מגביל בתחילת המשפט, או ליצור משפט תנאי רשמי ללא "if".
מהו Inversion ומתי משתמשים בו?
בדרך כלל סדר המשפט באנגלית הוא: נושא — פועל עזר — פועל ראשי. כאשר מביאים ביטוי שלילי או מגביל לתחילת המשפט, הסדר מתהפך: פועל עזר — נושא — פועל ראשי. מבנה זה נפוץ בכתיבה פורמלית, בנאומים ובבחינות בגרות.
- She had never seen such a beautiful sunset.—היא מעולם לא ראתה שקיעה כה יפה. (משפט רגיל)
- Never had she seen such a beautiful sunset.—מעולם לא ראתה שקיעה כה יפה. (עם היפוך — פורמלי יותר)
ביטויי שלילה והגבלה הגורמים להיפוך
הביטויים הבאים, כשמופיעים בתחילת המשפט, מחייבים היפוך בין הנושא לפועל העזר. חשוב לשים לב לפועל העזר המתאים לזמן ולמשמעות.

Inversion במשפטי תנאי (ללא "if")
ניתן להשמיט את המילה "if" ולהשתמש בהיפוך כדי ליצור משפטי תנאי פורמליים יותר. שלושה מבנים עיקריים: Had (תנאי שלישי), Were (תנאי שני פורמלי), Should (תנאי ראשון פורמלי).
- If I had known the answer, I would have told you. → Had I known the answer, I would have told you.—אילו ידעתי את התשובה, הייתי אומר לך.
- If I were you, I would apologise. → Were I you, I would apologise.—אילו הייתי במקומך, הייתי מתנצל.
- If you should need help, please call me. → Should you need help, please call me.—אם תזדקק לעזרה, אנא התקשר אלי.

⚠️ טעויות נפוצות
✗ Never I have seen such courage.
✓ Never have I seen such courage.
הפועל העזר (have) חייב לבוא לפני הנושא (I), לא אחריו.
✗ Hardly I had sat down when the teacher arrived.
✓ Hardly had I sat down when the teacher arrived.
גם כאן — had עולה לפני I. זהו ההיפוך.
✗ No sooner he left than it started raining.
✓ No sooner had he left than it started raining.
No sooner משתמש ב-had (Past Perfect) עם היפוך, ואחריו than — לא when.
